5 Essential Baking Tools Under $50

Listen, we’re all staying inside due to the global pandemic and while many of us are baking our little hearts out, some of you may be afraid to try it because you "don't have the right stuff".

With so many people indoors (and becoming an artisan bread bakers), I thought I would share some of my tried and true tools, methods, and general attitudes about life as a pastry chef. So to kick things off, here's a list of five essential and inexpensive tools--all of these combined are less than $100--that every pro has in their kitchen.

In no particular order:

  1. A stainless steel mixing bowl. I prefer metal over glass because it heats/cools more quickly. For example, if you're melting chocolate, a glass bowl will hold onto the heat longer increasing your chances of accidental scorching. Also, I drop things a lot and metal doesn’t shatter. And they're incredibly easy to clean. So there you go.

  2. An Ateco bench scraper. Literally a kitchen workhorse. Use it for dividing dough, cutting butter, scraping your bench (bench = fancy chef speak for countertop), transferring items around. I l-o-v-e my bench scraper.

  3. An Ateco offset spatula. These are the long skinny metal spatulas that have a little bend in them. I cannot stress enough, BUY THIS IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT. Inexpensive, it's perfect for frosting and spreading evenly and into tight corners. You can also use it to make fun designs in your frosting. Every pro baker has one!

  4. A Vollrath rubber spatula in small and large sizes. A good quality spatula will make scraping out your bowls/pots/pans much easier and faster. GIR is another brand very popular with chef-y types.

  5. A digital scale. People always say weighing ingredients freaks them out—it’s scary!—what a forest of lies. Honestly, weighing your ingredients is so much easier. If a recipe says 100 grams, you know exactly how much you need! No need to worry if you filled your measuring cup properly! No concerns about product consistency because you’ll be measuring correctly every time!

You don’t need an army’s worth of baking equipment to bake like a professional, but these are a few pieces of equipment that will greatly improve your baking experience.

And stay inside. Please and thank you.
